Hexetestamentet- a ritual of Justice

Site specific performance walk/ ritual, Helsingør old City
Concept, director, script, libretto: me.
Glorious costume team: Pille Behrendt, Laura Bogstad, Annemarie Winkler, Charlotte Trier Tett. Soundscape, aria, requiem: Tin Soheili, choreography and co-directing: Adelaide Bentzon

In 1628 8 women were burned in Helsingør in one of the most absurd witch trials in Denmark. We follow in the footsteps of Marine who is one of the young widows in the town. She is trying to survive by selling things on the market and making herb teas for the poor, but one of the poor women drinking the tea dies. The neighbors accuse her of witchcraft and we follow her through torture and imprisonment to the stake. Here she is to be burned with 7 other ”witches”. But a black Justice Goddess shows up. She take the witches down from the pyre, and together with the audience she creates a musical burial ritual for the 8, and an even bigger light ritual for all the 1000 women burned at the stake in Denmark.

Over 50 people take part in this grand scale performance:  opera singers, dancers, a choir, a marching band, actors, guides and riggers. The costume team created the 8 cloaks of Dignity with 15 citizens of Elsinore. The cloaks were adorned with everything you could find in a home, a hommage  from women of today to the lost lives of women of the past: embroidery with human hair, coins, votive metal plaquettes, spoons, forks and knives.

This performance is an ode to a couple that has been together for 25 years and looks back on their magical and enchanted love life. From the early stages, -with a tree full of love letters, to the full blown stage, - created as a song performance around a beautiful lake.
